Recyclable, degradable, biodegradable, compostable or reusable bags

Recyclable bags

Nowadays, every time we go to the supermarket to shop, we leave loaded with a number of plastic bags that generate a great environmental impact.

To calm consumer conscience, the bags have printed messages such as “degradable”, “biodegradable”, “compostable”, etc…

What do these terms mean and what are the differences between them?

Recyclable bags

They are conventional polyethylene bags. A lot of CO2 is emitted for their manufacture and they take more than 100 years to decompose.

They can be recycled if you place them in their corresponding container (yellow), but given the large number of this type of bags that exist, only 10% is recycled.

Biodegradable bags

They are bags that contain compounds of potato starch, corn, etc. They can be broken down into nutrients and biomass when in contact with air, sunlight or water.

To make them, they require a similar or greater amount of energy than recyclable bags.

compostable bags

They are biodegradable and compostable bags. Just because they are biodegradable, does not mean they are compostable. The key to this is that the material must decompose in the same time as the organic matter that reaches the composting plant.

There are some seals such as “OK compost” that certify that the bag is compostable.

Degradable bags

They are conventional bags to which an additive is added that accelerates their degradation due to the effect of oxygen or light.

When they degrade they are not visible to the eye, but some particular ones remain that can pass into the food chain.

Reusable bags

They are the bags that allow you to make numerous uses of them. Among these are those sold by some hypermarkets of fabric, nylon, etc.

Where is each of these bags recycled?

Los Recyclable bags in the yellow container.

Las biodegradable and degradable They cannot go into the yellow container because they are not recyclable and neither can they go into an organic container. Where do these bags go then? Does anyone know?

Las compostable They go to the organic bin.

In Luis Gil We give our customers with each purchase a reusable bag, made with ecological materials that they can use in future purchases.

And you, what type of bags do you use?
